Presentation Design

Dealing with Controversial Topics

Occasionally some topics that remain experimental, are unproven or unconventional may be addressed in a presentation. the ACCME offers some advice on dealing with these instances, along with a clinical content validation policy. The strategies they offer are summarized here:

  • Communicate appropriate parameters to the presenter(s)
  • Construct the activity as a debate or dialogue that offers multiple perspectives
  • Design the activity as a discussion about the merits and limitations of a therapeutic or diagnostic approach, as opposed to specific uses
  • Specifically identify content that not yet been deemed scientifically meritorious
  • Clearly describe the level of evidence associated with the topic and provide sufficient information and references to enable learners to assess research validity
